Crimson Moon stood out during last month’s supersized PlayStation State of Play for its high-octane attitude and metal soundtrack. The action RPG can be played solo or in two-player co-op, and it mixes the grim fantasy of Dark Souls with the relentless energy of Doom.

You play as a Nephilim, half-angel and half-human, who sets out to slay undead creatures that are terraforming the world and to make your way to a massive tower that’s home to a big bad. The game is split into missions in a roguelike-esque structure: you always start in a gilded central hub to manage your loadout and choose a basic character archetype before heading out on a run toward a boss.

Combat leans into straightforward action with spectacle. You’ll be slashing, dodging, and parrying through an undead-infested world, using hell-raising special attacks and a charged gauge to activate Angel Mode — an “oh shit moment” similar to God of War’s Spartan Rage.
