Cristo Fernandez features in El Paso preseason friendly, could sign
Cristo Fernandez, who played Dani Rojas on Ted Lasso, appeared in a preseason friendly for USL Championship side El Paso Locomotive on Saturday, a club source confirmed. The club is expected to decide on a professional contract early this week. Fernandez, 35, played 30 minutes in the friendly against New Mexico United and was pictured training over the weekend.
Club sources confirmed Monday morning that a decision on his future will be made in the coming days. He played youth soccer in Mexico until he was 15, spending time in the Tecos FC academy before two significant knee injuries halted his progression. Encouraged to focus on his studies, he later took up acting at the University of Guadalajara and went on to appear in the first three seasons of Ted Lasso.
He also played in a game for Chicago Fire 2 last month. Fernandez is not the only cast member with a football background: Kola Bokinni played at a semi-professional level, and Phil Dunster has been noted for his footballing skill.
