Critical Role has a history of killing characters, and Campaign 4 continued that pattern. Its harsh world — battered by relentless storms, stretches of eternal darkness, corrupted celestials and unstable magic — set the scene for a shocking death early in the story: the brutal murder of Occtis Tachonis.

In episode 4, after his brother Ethrand landed a critical hit, Occtis’ heart was torn from his chest and replaced with the Stone of Nightsong. Thaisha Lloy reached out and told him it wasn’t his time to pass, which kept him from crossing over, but he remained dead until Bolaire and Murray miraculously extracted the stone.

Murray’s extraction required Marisha Ray’s Portent natural 20, and Occtis returned as an undead “Hollow One.” Episode 18 reveals why House Tachonis did this. Tansul, the human Shaper, had instructed priests to sacrifice themselves to become a celestial weapon called the Deva Vindicta in case the orc Shaper Azgra threatened him; after the Shapers fell, those celestials turned corrupt.
