Critical Role reshapes Speak with the Dead in Campaign 4
The Seekers arc of Critical Role Campaign 4 ended explosively, and Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan revealed a significant change to the Speak with the Dead spell. The party reached a holy temple of Tansul and found House Tachonis conducting a scheme around creating celestials; the family had also led the Barrowguard of Castle Torch into a trap, producing waves of freshly undead.
The fight closed with Vaelus (Ashley Johnson) uncovering the body of Pascard Velmonte, someone Thaisha Lloy (Aabria Iyengar) knew, and Vaelus cast Speak with the Dead to learn more. [Ed. note: This article contains spoilers for episode 18 of Critical Role Campaign 4.] Under Dungeons & Dragons 5.5e as written, Speak with the Dead lets a caster speak to a corpse and ask up to five questions; the corpse knows only what it knew in life, cannot learn new information, cannot comprehend events since its death or speculate about the future, and cannot be spoken to again for 10 days.
