Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton won the Democratic primary for a rare open US Senate seat, defeating Representatives Raja Krishnamoorthi and Robin Kelly. She is expected to win the general election and take the seat of retiring Senator Dick Durbin.

The crypto industry’s spending, which heavily backed Krishnamoorthi, appears to have been a political liability with many progressive voters. Stratton ran on a progressive platform opposing President Donald Trump, and the Chicago Sun-Times noted she was the only candidate to openly oppose Immigration and Customs Enforcement; she also backed a higher minimum wage than her rivals.

Political action committees such as Fairshake and Protect Progress poured millions into the race as the Senate debated bills like the CLARITY Act. Krishnamoorthi had supported the GENIUS Act, voted for the CLARITY Act and the Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act, earning an “A” rating from Stand With Crypto.
