Cyndi Lauper Sells Two Decades of Wardrobe in Lower East Side Cleanout
Cyndi Lauper’s clothing from the past 20-plus years was sold in a small “closet cleanout” held in a donated Lower East Side space, drawing fans who lined up for hours for a chance to buy pieces from the pop star’s wardrobe. Items on offer included a pop art Moschino blazer Ms. Lauper wore on stage with Nicki Minaj, Diesel tops and skinny jeans she wore while traveling, and stagewear from recent years.
Shoppers waited more than five hours in cold weather; Alicia Abelli clutched a black lace bodysuit and said, “This is straight out of the ’90s!” Riley Verry bought a handmade plastic chapeau that she said looked like a series of Saturn’s rings and praised Ms. Lauper’s “freedom of expression.” The sale was organized by Ms.
Lauper’s stylist of 25 years, Nikki Fontanella, with designer Stephanie Paterek. “I just literally wanted to clean out her closet,” Ms. Fontanella said, and she aimed to make items accessible to fans with largely modest prices, including a $10 bargain bin. Photos of Ms. Lauper were affixed to many garments, some still smelled of perfume, and shoppers mingled amid vintage coats, Alice + Olivia suits and rainbow faux fur.
Ms. Lauper was not in attendance, the article says, because she was preparing for her first Las Vegas residency this spring. By Wednesday everything was sold out and net proceeds went to Girls Just Wanna Have Fundamental Rights, Ms.
