Dakota Mortensen filed for a protective order in Utah, citing incidents on Feb. 23 and Feb. 24 in which he says Taylor Frankie Paul choked him during an argument. Mortensen says he had to remove her hands from his neck after she pushed him into a window and hit him, calling the episode "chaotic" and "frightening"; their son, Ever, was reportedly present and woke from a nap to Paul’s screaming.

He also alleges he called 911 but was manipulated into disconnecting the call and telling dispatch their son was ill, and that Paul threatened to hurt herself and was "emotionally volatile." Mortensen says he left Paul’s home with Ever for safety after the initial incident.

The next night, he alleges Paul threw his phone, blocked him from leaving, struck him as he got into his truck and threw a beverage, forcing him at one point to push her off; he says he suffered bruises and cuts and later received a message from Paul claiming she had a bloody nose and needed medical treatment, which he called an attempt to keep him from contacting police.
