Movieweb reports that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s new Netflix action thriller The Rip has received strong early reviews, standing at 88% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Directed by Joe Carnahan, the film leans into genre tropes such as dirty cops and epic shootouts and features an ensemble including Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Scott Adkins and Kyle Chandler. MovieWeb’s Corey Atad called The Rip “a totally different register” for the pair that “delivers in exactly the ways they’d hoped — and in some surprising ways, too.” RogerEbert.com awarded the movie a near-perfect 3/4 and called it “a testament to Joe Carnahan’s direction that there’s not a false note in this talented ensemble,” while Reel Talk with Chuck and Pam praised its twists. Some outlets were more tempered, with Collider saying the film is “solid enough to earn a mild recommendation,” and ScreenRant adding, “It's like the film is cosplaying as a tense, twisty thriller.”

The Rip is streaming now. According to the official synopsis, "Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question -- including who they can rely on." Early reactions overall tease an intense action spectacle aimed at genre fans, while a few reviews remain more mixed.
