Dark City Flopped at the Box Office Before Becoming a Cult Classic
Alex Proyas’s 1998 sci‑fi noir Dark City failed to find an audience on its initial release but has since gathered a devoted following. The director, best known for 1994’s The Crow, presented a bleak, ever‑changing metropolis and a story that many viewers discovered only after the film left theaters.
Rufus Sewell stars as John Murdoch, a man who awakens with a shattered memory and finds himself wanted for a murder he does not recall. As he investigates, Detective Frank Bumstead (William Hurt) pursues him while a group known as the Strangers reshapes the city each night and rewrites its citizens.
Jennifer Connelly plays John’s wife Emma, and Kiefer Sutherland portrays Dr. Daniel Schreber; the screenplay was written by Proyas with Lem Dobbs and David S. Goyer. The production reportedly cost $27 million and earned $27.2 million worldwide, leaving it short once marketing expenses were included.
