Six years before Dishonored, Arkane released Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, a game best known for booting orcs from cliffs. What began as modder Dave Wiltos's effort to add co‑op eventually led Ubisoft to give a "blank check" to develop an SDK; Wiltos wrote on ModDB in 2023 that Ubisoft "don't want to impose any sort of restrictions so that the community can really appreciate the full value of the work that's being put in here." Since then the team has been working on RTX, a dungeon generator and co‑op features.

After a trip to Ubisoft Montreal in which he got "[console port] Dark Messiah Elements to work on PC," Wiltos says they are now building a Community Edition "with approval from Ubisoft and support from Valve." Elements, released on the Xbox 360, expanded and tweaked the original PC release and added a new prologue.
