Dark Waters: Haynes’ True-Crime Thriller on the DuPont Scandal
Todd Haynes, better known for intimate period dramas, revealed a different side with Dark Waters, a true-crime thriller that follows the DuPont pollution scandal through corporate lawyer Robert Bilott, portrayed by Mark Ruffalo. Rather than opening at the crisis’ origin, the film traces Bilott’s slow, methodical discovery of a cover-up that had been harming a rural community for years.
Set in 1998, much of the story plays out in boardrooms and offices as Bilott investigates unexplained animal deaths in Parkersburg, West Virginia and pieces together testimony, contracts and video evidence showing unregulated chemicals were being dumped. Haynes keeps the procedural detail taut, letting new revelations gradually change Bilott’s perspective and raise the stakes from economic to life-and-death.
Ruffalo anchors the film with a restrained but increasingly driven performance, while Anne Hathaway’s Sarah gives the material emotional ballast; her hospital-room plea about her husband’s sacrifices is one of the film’s most affecting moments.
