Dark Winds was renewed for a fifth season before Season 4 premiered, and showrunner John Wirth discussed the series' new direction as Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon), Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) and Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) return and finally reunite. Wirth said Leaphorn's ruminations on retirement and succession set up fresh tension between the three, and that yanking them out of the Navajo Nation and into Los Angeles — a place where they are uncomfortable — heightens danger and mistrust.

He emphasized the characters' deep connection to the land and how removing that anchor adds dramatic stakes. The season's central threat is Franka Potente's Irene Vaggan. Wirth described her as a sociopath and a psychopath — “demented,” he said — and explained that the show made the character female rather than male, gave her a specific World War II–era German backstory and a fixation on Native American fantasy literature, which leads her to the reservation and to an obsessive encounter with Joe Leaphorn.
