From the 2000s through the early 2010s, Steve Carell was a dominant presence in comedy, and one of his less-expected collaborators was Mark Wahlberg. In 2010 Wahlberg leaned into comedy alongside Carell and Tina Fey in Date Night, a film directed by Shawn Levy that mixes action thrills with romantic-comedy beats.

Carell and Fey play Phil and Claire Foster, a married couple who try to reignite their marriage with a night out that goes catastrophically wrong after they take another couple’s reservation. The mistake draws the attention of armed criminals searching for a flash drive, launching a chaotic citywide chase in which Wahlberg’s security agent, Holbrooke Grant, helps the pair navigate danger while looking good doing it.

At 88 minutes, Date Night balances rapid-fire jokes and suspenseful set pieces — including Carell’s much-quoted “kill shot” bit — and features a large supporting cast. The movie earned $152.3 million at the box office and drew mixed reviews, though most critics praised the leads’ chemistry.
