Dating AI partners, then finding real love with each other
Ayrin and SJ began separately by turning to conversational AI when real-world care and company felt out of reach. Ayrin, studying nursing away from home, personalised a ChatGPT companion called Leo and found it attentive and flirtatious; SJ, recovering from health problems, spent long nights with a companion called Nyx that felt like someone to talk to at any hour.
Both described how the AI made them feel safe, understood and validated, even as they noticed limits. The companionship could be playful and reliable but lacked its own desire or the spontaneous intimacy that comes with another person. That difference left them wrestling with how authentic the emotion felt, and with how much support they were placing in a programmable presence.
They connected through a subreddit for people in AI relationships and moved from messages to video calls. Their friendship deepened into mutual longing, and they met in London and later Amsterdam.
