Davide Ancelotti applied for Strasbourg job but lost out to Gary O'Neil
Goal reports that Davide Ancelotti put his name forward to succeed Liam Rosenior as Strasbourg manager after Rosenior moved to Chelsea, but the club ultimately appointed Gary O'Neil.
According to L'Equipe, Strasbourg received many applications following Rosenior's departure and one of them was from Ancelotti. He has held assistant coaching roles under his father at Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Napoli and Everton, and he managed Botafogo for six months before being sacked last December. He was also a candidate for the Reims job in 2024 and speaks English, Italian, French and Spanish, but it seems his lack of managerial experience counted against him.
O'Neil, the former Bournemouth and Wolves boss, became Strasbourg's new manager last week and said he was 'proud' to join a club with a 'high-quality squad and clear, ambitious goals for the season'. Rosenior was in the Chelsea dugout for the first time as the Blues thumped Charlton Athletic 5-1 in the FA Cup last weekend, and O'Neil guided Strasbourg to a 6-0 rout of Avranches in the Coupe de France in his first match. Chelsea host Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg on Wednesday, while Strasbourg host Metz in Ligue 1 on Sunday.
