DCU Is Making Good on James Gunn's Promise to Vary Project Styles
So far the DCU has featured projects that James Gunn wrote or produced: Creature Commandos, Superman and Peacemaker. Gunn directed Superman and played a heavy role in the others. Creature Commandos and Peacemaker follow the band-of-misfits template with traumatic backstories that echo elements of Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, while Superman slightly broke the mold but still showed many of Gunn’s hallmarks.
When Gunn launched the DCU he pledged that each film and series would avoid a single house style, a contrast to critiques often leveled at the MCU despite its variety of genres and titles such as Black Panther, Werewolf by Night, and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. The DCU has an opportunity to lean into bold experimentation and showcase how different artistic voices can build comic-book continuity.
Early trailers have highlighted that variety.
