Democratic Socialists hold Bushwick rave to celebrate Mayor Mamdani
Hundreds of Democratic Socialists gathered at Paragon, a checkerboard‑floored dance club in Bushwick, Brooklyn, to celebrate the inauguration of Zohran Mamdani as mayor with what the paper described as a low-key rave. The sold-out event was hosted by the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America.
The night combined thumping house music, a cash bar and low-budget swag, and featured chants of 'tax the rich' led by Eon Huntley, a socialist assembly candidate. Mr. Mamdani did not attend, though his membership in the D.S.A. was a source of pride for attendees; Mamdani buttons and beanies were common and Jacobin magazine sponsored a merch table where its editor Micah Uetricht handed out red 'Socialism in Our Time' scarves and praised the mayor's ability to invite people into a new vision.
The party doubled as a fundraiser for the N.Y.C. D.S.A., with 500 tickets sold, most at the $25 price, and was interrupted for speeches by elected officials and organizers. Co-chair Grace Mausser urged partygoers to volunteer for campaigns, and fellow chair Gustavo Gordillo led a call-and-response oath with promises to 'fight for our freedom' and to 'love and support one another,' closing with the refrain 'We have nothing to lose but our chains.'
