Denmark’s prime minister told President Trump to “stop the threats” after he repeated his intention to acquire Greenland in the wake of a U.S. military raid in Venezuela that seized Nicolás Maduro, the outlet said. Mr. Trump told reporters on Air Force One that “we need Greenland from the standpoint of national security” and said he thought Denmark was not doing enough to safeguard the island; he also told The Atlantic, “We do need Greenland, absolutely,” saying the island was “surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships,” the report said.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the United States had “no right to annex” Greenland and that Greenlanders “have said very clearly that they are not for sale.” Jens‑Frederik Nielsen, Greenland’s prime minister, called Mr. Trump’s rhetoric “utterly unacceptable” and “wrong” and “disrespectful,” the account said.

The exchange followed other U.S. moves that have alarmed Danish officials, including the recent appointment of a U.S. special envoy to Greenland, an intelligence assessment that warned about shifts in American policy, and reports of U.S. spying and covert influence efforts on the island.
