Deus Ex: Invisible War is set after a Great Collapse triggered by the events of the first game, when JC Denton’s actions leave global communications fractured and the Illuminati restored to power. Society has reorganised into small wealthy enclave zones while the rest of the world endures poverty and everyday violence.

Two figures dominate the new order: Chad Dumier, now head of the World Trade Organisation, who values price stability above housing or public health, and Nicolette DuClare, who has become Her Holiness and founded The Order, a syncretic religious movement that preaches spiritual acceptance of material deprivation.

Opposition comes from the Templars, an anti-augmentation movement that grew out of the Order and recruits from those excluded from the enclaves. Their leader, Luminon Saman, and strange side characters such as Bud Puckett, reflect a politics shaped by resentment and contradiction rather than coherent policy.
