Dichen Lachman Teases "A Whole World We Don't Know" About Gemma in Severance

Dichen Lachman says there's still “a world we don't know” to explore for Gemma Scout after Severance's second season. The season wrapped in March 2025 and left several questions open: how long can Mark S and Helly R remain together after defying Lumon, what Lumon intends for the severance technology, and what Gemma will do now that she’s free of Lumon’s control.

Gemma began as Ms. Casey, a “wellness counselor” working in the bowls of the Lumon building alongside the other “Innies,” people whose personalities have been severed. Mark believed Gemma had died — a belief that helped drive his decision to sever — and Lachman learned early in the casting process that Ms.

Casey was more important than she first appeared. She recalls finding out on a Zoom call with Ben Stiller before she'd read the scripts and said, “oh my gosh, I couldn't be more excited to play this part.” Season 2 revealed Lumon faked Gemma's death and kept her on a sub-floor for experiments aimed at pushing the severance technology.
