Discord will launch "teen-by-default" settings globally next month. The new default will restrict access to age-gated spaces and filter content deemed inappropriate for teens. Unlocking Discord's full suite of features will start with sharing your face with the company.

Discord is a messaging platform favored by gamers and has been integrated with PlayStation and Xbox in recent years. Roll20 can be launched directly through the platform, and the service grew during COVID to become close to ubiquitous in gaming spaces. Discord said, "Discord users can choose to use facial age estimation or submit a form of identification to its vendor partners, with more options coming in the future." The company assures users that video selfies will never leave the device, documents submitted to vendor partners will be deleted after age verification, and a user's verification status will not be visible to others.
