Disney's $569M Live-Action Remake Reemerges on Streaming Charts
Disney has produced over 20 live-action adaptations of its animated films. The first was The Jungle Book, released in 1994 and directed by Stephen Sommers; later entries include 101 Dalmatians (1996) and 102 Dalmatians (2000). The studio returned to remakes in 2010 with Alice in Wonderland and The Sorcerer's Apprentice, and most recently released Lilo & Stitch in May 2025.
Moana is scheduled for release this July, and Tangled remains in development. The 2023 live-action The Little Mermaid has resurfaced on streaming charts, landing at number nine on Disney+'s Top 10 Overall in the United States, between Prey and Ice Age. Critics were divided on the film—it holds a 67% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes—while audiences gave it a 93% score.
The movie grossed over $569 million at the box office and received nominations including Best Fantasy Film at the Saturn Awards and Favorite Movie at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.
