Disney's Live-Action 'Robin Hood' Remake Canceled
Disney has canceled its planned live-action remake of the 1973 animated Robin Hood. The project was announced in 2020 with Kari Granlund attached to write and Carlos López Estrada set to direct. In a Reddit AMA, Estrada said, "It’s dead, sadly." He added, "I say sadly because I actually thought there was something really special (and original!) there.
Some truly extraordinary music we had figured out for it." The decision comes as Disney has grown more selective about which classics to rework for live action. After a decade that included Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King, the studio has shifted toward remaking more recent animated films.
Several pre-1990 projects that were greenlit during the pandemic—such as Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's The Sword and the Stone and Sarah Polley’s proposed Bambi—were put on hold, and Questlove's Aristocrats remake was later canceled.
