Polygon reports a player has identified a possible cause of Monster Hunter Wilds' poor PC performance: Reddit user de_Tylmarande says the game repeatedly checks which DLC a player owns, and those checks tax the processor enough to cause frame drops. Tylmarande tested accounts with and without DLC and found Wilds runs near-constant checks to verify installed add-ons.

They created a mod that makes the game think all DLC is owned (without adding it) and said Wilds then skips the check, with performance improving "through the roof" in the game's balanced mode without CPU boosting. "The more DLC you own, the better performance you get in the game," Tylmarande wrote, and later added they did not mean to imply Capcom implemented the behaviour on purpose, calling it a bug.

The post was briefly removed from the Monster Hunter subreddit before being reinstated after others replicated the results, and Digital Foundry has said it will publish its own testing — "Yes, it's true, and we'll have the numbers... from our trusty Ryzen 5 3600 entry-level PC," the team said.
