Every tax season is a headache. Americans spend hours putting together their returns, a tedious chore that sometimes results in turning over even more money to the Internal Revenue Service. For many people, filing a tax return can be a financial lifeline. Tax refunds can help catch up on bills, pay for a vacation or pad savings.

Those refunds are expected to be particularly significant this year after President Trump and the Republican Party passed a series of tax cuts last year, including a new tax break for people 65 and older and expanded deductions for state and local taxes. Republicans hope voters notice these changes and back the G.O.P.
