Dónal Finn to lead gritty audio drama Turpin
Dónal Finn, who appears in Young Sherlock as James Moriarty and is known for his work on Wheel of Time, will headline Turpin, a new audio drama from Big Finish Productions. Young Sherlock, directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin, features Finn among a supporting ensemble that includes Natascha McElhone, Joseph Fiennes, Max Irons and Colin Firth.
Big Finish, the team behind a long catalogue of Doctor Who audio stories, commissioned Turpin from writers Mat Braddy and Darren Rapier, who direct the project alongside Ken Bentley. The series is billed as a "gritty, visceral and darkly funny" take on the legend and is scheduled to debut this Summer.
Rapier said he wanted to move beyond the dashing highwayman cliché and tell the true story of Richard Turpin, which he and Braddy found closer in character to the Kray twins than to Robin Hood. He added that working in audio allowed them to present the tale in a fast, chaotic way, and described the piece as a period action drama.
