The same Nintendo team that made Super Mario Odyssey developed Donkey Kong Bananza, and while there are obvious similarities the two games aim for distinct flavors of 3D platforming. That separation is intentional — Nintendo wants each title to feel unique.

Producer Kenta Motokura says part of the team's approach to Bananza's destruction mechanics was motivated by thinking about what a human could not do, what Mario could not do, and what scale of destruction would come only from Donkey Kong as he punches rocks.

The design choices are meant to shape different experiences and, perhaps, to appeal to slightly different kinds of players who might prefer one character over the other.
