Donyell Malen leaves Aston Villa as Roma describe move as loan with option
Donyell Malen has left Aston Villa to join Roma, with Villa saying he has joined the Italian club for an undisclosed fee while Roma describe the deal as a loan with an option to buy. Malen scored seven goals in 29 games for Villa this season and departs after a year, having joined from Borussia Dortmund last January.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said defender Fabian Schär underwent surgery after sustaining an ankle injury in the win over Leeds and that the operation was "successful". "It's difficult to give a definitive but I think roughly around three months will be the diagnosis we'll work towards," Howe said, adding that if recovery is quicker that would be welcome but "we need to give Fabian time to recover, it's quite a serious injury." Liverpool manager Arne Slot spoke about Mo Salah returning to the club after Egypt's AFCON third-place playoff against Nigeria, saying Salah "needs to play another big game for Egypt on Saturday and then he comes back to us and I’m happy that he comes back." Slot also praised Andy Robertson's recent comments about his role at the club, saying "I have to give him a big compliment about the things he said" and calling his attitude mature.
The wider weekend story is Michael Carrick's second debut as Manchester United manager/head coach, with a home Manchester derby against their "noisy neighbours" looming.
