Dragon Quest Builders 2, the developer’s previous block-building game, shares a lot with Pokémon Pokopia but expands on the formula with more ways to build and more reasons to branch out. Both games start from a broken world and give you a special power to make things whole; Builders 2 even leans into a narrative touch where you adopt a villain-coded amnesiac as part of the story.

Where Pokopia uses story as loose framing, Builders 2 makes it central. It’s a spinoff from Dragon Quest 2 set after a “wrong choice” ending in which Hargon takes over and building is forbidden. That puts your rebuilding efforts in direct conflict with an evil, godlike force that sends armies of monsters — deadly despite Akira Toriyama’s signature cute designs — to attack settlements.

Combat is simple (one button to swing a sword), but you must also build defensively, adding fortifications or stone walls to protect vital infrastructure like public toilets.
