Driver charged after fatal Nigeria crash that killed two of Anthony Joshua's team
A driver has been charged after a crash in Nigeria injured boxer Anthony Joshua and killed two members of his team, police said.
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was charged at Sagamu Magistrates' Court. Prosecutors brought four counts including causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid driver's licence, a police source told the BBC.
The crash occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Ogun state when the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and his team collided with a stationary truck. Personal trainer Latif Ayodele and strength coach Sina Ghami were pronounced dead at the scene. Joshua was taken to hospital and discharged on Wednesday.
Mr Kayode was granted bail of 5,000,000 Naira (£2,578) and remanded pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions. The case has been adjourned until 20 January.
Ogun and Lagos state officials said Joshua was "heavy hearted" over the deaths; after leaving hospital he visited the funeral home where the bodies were being prepared for repatriation.
The boxer, who was on his way to visit relatives in Sagamu for New Year celebrations, had been in Nigeria after his win over Jake Paul on 19 December. Promoter Eddie Hearn paid tribute on Instagram, and Paul posted on X offering his prayers for those affected.
