Dubai status as safe travel hub at risk amid Iran war, higher fuel prices
The war with Iran is disrupting travel and challenging Dubai's reputation as a safe global hub. Just over a week into the conflict, thousands of flights have been canceled or rerouted, and oil prices spiked — surpassing $100 a barrel over the weekend before dipping to roughly $86 — while United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said airfare increases would "probably start quick." Dubai spent decades building a reputation as an attractive, safe, and luxurious destination and remains a common layover connecting Europe, Africa, and Asia; Emirates has its global hub at Dubai International Airport.
The airport was the second-busiest worldwide in total passengers in 2024 and the busiest for international passengers, and Anna Abelson warned that if Dubai loses its status as a 'safe haven' and 'seamless transfer hub,' travelers could seek alternative routes.
"This is unprecedented," Abelson said.
