Movieweb reports that Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer have shot down a rumored sequel series that would reunite the original cast, saying they will not develop a sequel spin-off to bring those characters back.

Matt Duffer told The Hollywood Reporter, "We really don't know. I mean, Mike's closing the basement door. We're closing the door on the story. That's one reason we had the closing credits the way we did, because it was a way of saying: 'This is finite. This is the end of their story. It's the end of the story of Mike and Eleven and Joyce and Hopper.'" He also said planning a sequel felt like a "cash grab" and added, "Grandpa Hopper? I don't know how that would read as anything but a gross cash grab to me." He declined to discuss the live-action spin-off Stranger Things: Tales from '85, saying, "I'm not allowed to yet."

The Duffers said the final season allowed them to finish what they wanted to say about the characters and the Upside Down and that they are excited to explore new characters and a new mythology. With it only being a week since the series finale, they acknowledged fan-favorite actors could appear in future spin-offs but sounded confident they do not want to reunite the original cast for another outing.
