Dune: Part Three Sets Up Franchise Future With Leto II
The first trailer for Dune: Part Three opens with the message "Experience the epic conclusion of the Dune trilogy," and frames this as the last time director Denis Villeneuve will visit Arrakis. It presents a final outing for Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides, Zendaya's Chani, the Bene Gesserit, the sandworms and the Fremen, though Warner Bros.
may be reluctant to abandon a franchise that has already grossed over a billion dollars worldwide from the first two films. Frank Herbert wrote six Dune books, and his son Brian expanded the saga after 1986, so more adaptations remain possible. The trailer also plants seeds for the next generation.
Paul and Chani discuss names for their unborn child — Ghanima for a girl or Leto for a boy — and the film adapts Dune Messiah, which ends with the birth of twins Leto II and Ghanima. Rather than limiting them to newborns, the movie will include teenage versions: Leto II is set to be played by 17-year-old Nakoa-Wolf Momoa, while Ida Brooke will play Ghanima.
