Dutton Ranch director says Yellowstone spin-off feels like season 6

Greg Yaitanes, who directed episodes of Marshals and Dutton Ranch, says the Yellowstone spin-off often felt like a continuation of the original series. With the core show concluded, Taylor Sheridan has been exploring the Dutton family through multiple projects, and some of those involved expected a strong tonal overlap.

Yaitanes suggested Kayce Dutton would fit naturally into Dutton Ranch and that many on the production felt they were effectively making Yellowstone season 6. He contrasted that with Marshals, which he described as more genre-driven and guns-forward, and noted the creative teams had talked about characters appearing across the shows.

The original series had been anchored by Kevin Costner as John Dutton, and his decision to leave during Season 5 prompted Sheridan to bring the story to a close rather than continue without that central figure. Costner reportedly wanted to focus on his Horizon projects, and reports of creative differences also factored into the end of the show.
