Elliott and RedBird's financial reengineering of AC Milan
Elliott Management stabilised AC Milan through financial discipline, governance reform and a recalibrated sporting strategy. That turnaround reduced losses, strengthened equity and rebuilt revenue streams, culminating in the 2021/22 Scudetto under Zlatan Ibrahimović and a return to the UEFA Champions League.
On 31 August 2022 RedBird Capital Partners acquired the club in a transaction valuing Milan at about €1.2 billion. The purchase combined equity, mezzanine financing and vendor debt: RedBird contributed roughly €681 million of equity, with about half structured as mezzanine or preferred equity provided by Ares Management, and Elliott provided approximately €550 million in vendor financing.
Elliott retained two board seats and kept the acquisition-related debt above the operating entity to avoid directly burdening the club’s balance sheet. RedBird positions itself as a platform investor.
