Fergus Campbell’s feature-length directorial debut Sparks stars Elsie Fisher as Cleo, a new-to-town teen in Sparks, Nevada. Ahead of the film’s world premiere at SXSW, the story introduces a local crew called the Crop and a growing passion in Cleo for cinema and the unexplained.

Cleo’s curiosity is provoked by a misplaced cigarette vending machine that inexplicably dispenses a book on Jean-Luc Godard. Driven by that discovery and by the Crop’s tales of a nearby reservoir that might allow travel through time, she pursues a mission to reach 1960s Paris and meet the famed filmmaker.

The sneak peek highlights the moment the vending machine appears in the suburban desert: after several failed plunges, Cleo drops coins and first retrieves a pack of Marlboros, then returns to pick up the unexpected book that follows. Campbell also wrote the screenplay.
