'We All Fall in Love Sometimes' appears on Elton John's ninth studio album, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy (1975). The soft-rock track was written with longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin, and John says he felt an immediate, profound connection when he first read the lyrics.

He described the words as beautiful — songs about trying to write songs, about no one wanting their songs, and about the strange relationship they had developed. John has said the song "made me well up because it was true," and that he loved Taupin like a brother and the best friend he'd ever had.

Captain Fantastic is largely autobiographical, tracing the early years of their careers and the friendship that carried them to success. In a 2013 interview he said every lyric on the album was about the two of them; he added that he cries when he sings this song and called Taupin his 'little soulmate,' noting he was gay by that time while Taupin was married.
