Jeffrey Epstein's personal lawyer, Darren Indyke, told the House Oversight Committee that large cash withdrawals stemmed from Epstein's need to run multiple households and from trouble obtaining credit cards after JPMorgan cut ties in 2013. In prepared remarks, Indyke said Epstein required cash to pay for maintenance, repairs and daily needs at residences in New York, Florida, New Mexico, Paris and the US Virgin Islands, as well as for meals, gifts, gratuities and fuel for his private aircraft.

He pointed to withdrawals made between 2013 and 2017; Justice Department files also include credit-card charges and credit reports showing accounts open from 2011 to 2017 and scores above 750. Lawyers for Epstein's accusers have highlighted the large cash withdrawals after his 2008 conviction, arguing banks should have flagged the activity.

JPMorgan, which severed ties after employees raised concerns, settled a class-action suit for $290 million; Deutsche Bank later settled for $75 million.
