Erin Doherty wins Golden Globe after uncensored curse in acceptance speech
People reports that Erin Doherty won Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role on Television at the 2026 Golden Globes on Sunday, Jan. 11, and that she shouted out therapists during an acceptance speech in which a swear was bleeped by CBS but remained on air.
Doherty, who plays child psychologist Briony Ariston in the Netflix series Adolescence, opened her speech by saying she had "made a promise to my mom" not to say the word "f---." While part of that sentiment was bleeped, the swear was still heard. She offered a cheeky apology to her mother, thanked her Adolescence cast mates and collaborators, and dedicated the award to therapists, saying, "I just think life can be tough. Mental health is everything. So thank you to therapists and it was an honor to play one. Thank you so much."
Doherty is a first-time nominee in the category and had recently won at the Emmys in September and the Critics Choice Award on Jan. 4. The Globes were strong for the Adolescence cast: Stephen Graham won Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television, and Owen Cooper won Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role on Television. Other nominees in Doherty's category included Aimee Lou Wood, Carrie Coon, Catherine O'Hara, Hannah Einbinder and Parker Posey.
