Esoteric Ebb is the best game like Disco Elysium that anybody's made since Disco Elysium. Where Disco was surreal noir, Esoteric Ebb leans into classical fantasy, approaching Dungeons & Dragons with a sensibility close to Shrek. It’s madcap and impressively reactive, with an inventive approach to combat and plenty of verbal surprises.

Mechanically it borrows from D&D—spell memorization, short and long rests, six attributes—but streamlines things so every check uses your raw ability bonus plus two proficiencies rather than a long list of discrete skills. Your attributes literally talk to you and change voice with point investments, and dialogue choices can even alter your class and character sheet.

Spellcasting feels tangible: you learn spells from scrolls found in the world and use them for both brute force and clever solutions.
