Ethereum Foundation’s mandate sparks debate over its role
The Ethereum Foundation released a 38-page mandate intended as a constitutional guide to its mission, clarifying its role and principles. It emphasizes the foundation as a neutral steward rather than a centralized authority, tasked with maintaining Ethereum as a decentralized, resilient infrastructure and supporting the protocol layer and public goods.
The document prompted a polarized response. Critics called it overly philosophical and ill-suited to help Ethereum compete for real-world and institutional adoption; Dankrad Feist said it does little to address practical business development concerns and noted 'there are very few voices in ACD caring about real world Ethereum usage.' Yuga Cohler warned the foundation may be focusing on ideological principles 'at a pivotal time when the institutions are finally coming onchain' and argued the EF should focus on making Ethereum 'the best chain for finance.' Supporters described the mandate as a needed reaffirmation of values.
