Everton handed Chelsea a heavy defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium, winning 3-0 as Beto scored twice and Iliman Ndiaye added a brilliant finish. It was Everton’s biggest win against Chelsea since 1987, and Jordan Pickford claimed the 100th clean sheet of his Everton career with two outstanding saves from Enzo Fernández.

The loss was Rosenior’s fourth consecutive defeat and his side’s second 3-0 reverse in succession, leaving the former Strasbourg coach in a difficult position. “I don’t want to make excuses, that was not good enough,” Rosenior said. “The performance was nowhere near what we wanted or expected.” Anger around Chelsea’s recent punishment — a £10.75m fine and a nine-month ban on signing academy players after findings of “deception and concealment” — gave the match an edgy atmosphere.

The Premier League anthem was booed before kick-off and Everton’s crowd fed the team with a passionate response to the sanctions and the wider indignation over illicit payments totalling £47.5m.
