Rules now prevent multiple nominations for the same performance after Barry Fitzgerald’s dual nominations in 1944, though there is no restriction on winning in both lead and supporting categories in the same year — a feat no one has achieved.

Sean Penn became the most recent addition to the three-or-more group after winning Best Supporting Actor for One Battle After Another, joining his Best Actor wins for Milk and Mystic River. That film marked his first nomination in the supporting category; his previous five nominations were all for leading roles.
