Every Alex Garland Movie, Ranked
Alex Garland is a filmmaker whose directing work is just as interesting as his novels and screenplay credits. He first started his career as a novelist and later wrote films such as 28 Days Later and the 28 Years Later trilogy. He also tried his hand at television, writing and directing all eight episodes of the limited series Devs.
Though he has done plenty of writing work, Garland has been selective about which projects he directs, having written and directed five films in total. At the top of the list is Ex Machina, Garland’s directorial debut: a haunting, provocative film that balances philosophical questions about consciousness with emotionally intimate performances, notably Alicia Vikander as Ava.
Civil War sits at number two, a dystopian action thriller that dramatizes a fractured America and examines violence through the observational lens of journalists. Annihilation ranks third; loosely based on the 2014 novel, it uses cosmic horror to explore grief and identity, anchored by Natalie Portman.
