Every Ip Man Movie, By Release Date and Chronological Order
Ip Man’s life and legacy have inspired more than a dozen films, beginning with Wilson Yip’s 2008 Ip Man starring Donnie Yen. The Yip–Yen partnership produced four films that trace more than two decades of the grandmaster’s life, while other directors and actors have offered different takes on his story.
The Yip-directed saga begins with Ip Man (2008), which covers his Foshan years during the Sino-Japanese War, and continues with Ip Man 2 (2010) in early postwar Hong Kong. Ip Man 3 (2015) moves into the 1950s–60s and expands the character’s emotional range, leading into Master Z: Ip Man Legacy (2018), a spin-off focused on Cheung Tin-chi with fight scenes by Yuen Woo-ping.
Ip Man 4: The Finale (2019) follows later-life struggles, including illness, family, and a trip to San Francisco. Other notable films explore different chapters and styles. The Legend Is Born: Ip Man (2010) traces his youth and training in Wing Chun, while Ip Man: The Final Fight (2013) looks at his later years in Hong Kong.
