Even a quiet January transfer window means thousands of new shirts will be printed — Lucas Paquetá’s return to Flamengo leaves his West Ham shirt feeling instantly out of date — and many other players move clubs every season. Uefa estimates up to 60% of kits worn by players are destroyed at the end of the season, and more than 1bn football shirts are thought to be in circulation, with many discarded by fans once players leave.

Designers are bringing upcycling skills to old kits, reshaping shirts into new garments and accessories.
