Former FBI agent Jason Pack said Sheriff Chris Nanos made a critical mistake when he revealed a belief that Nancy Guthrie was "targeted" and warned the Tucson community that her abductor could strike again, while declining to share his theory or additional detail.

Pack argued that a public warning without context raises urgent questions about who is at risk and what to do next. Pack warned that “a warning without context doesn’t necessarily protect people. It worries them,” and added that the idea of a repeat threat sits uneasily alongside the targeted-attack framing.

He urged closer coordination between the sheriff’s office and the FBI, saying unified public messaging signals a joint investigation is functioning effectively and that premature statements invite doubts about where the seams are. At the same time, Pack defended the decision not to disclose a suspected motive, calling that an investigative necessity: investigators should not hand a suspect a roadmap of what they know.
