Fabian Schar recounts 'most terrifying days' after Middle East conflict
Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar has revealed he was caught up in a major international conflict while in the Middle East for rehabilitation after suffering an ankle injury during Newcastle's 4-3 victory over Leeds in January. What began as a routine fitness trip escalated as regional tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States intensified into widespread military action.
With commercial flights grounded and drone attacks striking hubs such as Dubai, Schar said he sheltered alongside thousands of others and posted an image that appeared to show him in a basement. He wrote on Instagram: "I've just had a few of my most terrifying days having unfortunately witnessed first-hand what's happening in the Middle East.
I was there as part of my rehabilitation programme and I'm glad I found a way to get home safely. But what we experienced there, and what's happening right now, is truly frightening.
