Pcgamer says Fallout 4 feels like a brand-new game thanks to Survival Mode, which forces players to take naps, drink plenty of water, and prevents save-scumming by only allowing saves at beds.

Survival adds a number of changes: ammo has weight and increases encumbrance, you get hungry, thirsty and tired, most drugs spike thirst, fast travel is disabled, there's a system of diseases and parasites, enemies no longer appear on the compass, and you can only save at a bed (an exit save disappears once you load). The mode also gives double experience, more frequent legendary spawns, and an "adrenaline" bonus the longer you go without sleeping.

The author says Survival Mode has extended the early-game tension, making the Commonwealth feel larger and forcing more careful play, and that it may change how they approach Bethesda games and other RPGs. They also say they plan to try Josh Sawyer's jsawyer mod for New Vegas and Skyrim's survival mode later this year.
