The Switch 2 version of Fallout 4 launched just a handful of hours ago, and early impressions are far more positive than those that accompanied Bethesda's Skyrim port late last year. It is still too early for definitive technical conclusions, as no full breakdowns have appeared yet.

The launch trailer looks markedly improved over the initial Nintendo Direct reveal: shadows appear consistent, character models show more detail, and the vague shimmer seen on debut seems to be gone. Early live streams and social media impressions also look solid, and there are no widespread complaints about the input lag that rendered the Skyrim port "unplayable" in December.

Fallout 4 on Switch 2 offers three frame-rate targets — 30, 40 and 60 FPS. The 60 FPS mode brings a noticeable resolution drop, but the 40 FPS option appears to offer a good balance of visuals and performance if your display supports it. Overall, this looks like a dramatic upgrade over Skyrim on Switch 2, which launched locked to 30 FPS.
